Mnemonic for cardiac failure

 

Precipitating factors of cardiac failure = PRECIPITATES

P = Physical stress

R = Reduction of treatment inappropriately

E = Emotions

C = Cortocosteroid (secondary fluid retention)

I  = Infection (e.g.: Infective endocarditis)

P = Pulmonary embolism

= Increased metabolic demand (e.g.: anaemia, pregnancy)

T = Thyrotoxicosis

A = Arrhythmia

T = Tropic drugs

E = Everything else – hypertension

S = Secondary heart disease

 

Complications of cardiac failure = HATIKU

H = Hyponatremia (low sodium)

A = Arrhythmia

T = Thromboembolism

= Impaired liver function test

K = K+ low (hypokalemia)

U = Uraemia
