Types of contraception method
Family planning is a very important concept. Some couples need to conceive and some need to avoid conception. A planned pregnancy is a lot better than unplanned ones. It means that both parents are ready to accept a new person in their life. It will be better for the baby as well. Suitable method of contraception is important to ensure effectiveness. If a couple still wish to conceive later, they need to choose a reliable method to reverse their fertility when they are ready to conceive later. Below is the list of what kinds of contraception methods are currently available in the market. Choose it wisely the one that suits you. I will describe in detail for each methods in my other article.
1) Oral contraception – Is a very reliable contraception with failure rate <1% (especially for combined oral contraceptive method). However, user needs to be highly discipline and takes the pill on the same time every day.
- Combined oral contraceptive
- Progestogen only pills (mini pill)
2) Injectable contraception
- Progestogen only
- DMPA : Depo provera ( depot medroxyprogesterone)
- NET-EN : Norethisterone enantate
- Combined injectable contraceptive
- Cyclofem / Lunelle (medroxyprogesterone acetate & oestradiol cypionate)
- Mesigna (norethisterone & oestradiol valerate)
3) Implant – this is an easy method of contraception where you can insert the implant and forget about it.
- Implanon (etonogestrel implant)
- Norplant / Jadelle (levonogestrel implant)
4) Intrauterine devices – Is a useful technique if someone which to avoid pregnancy for 3-5 years. This method is not suitable if the female partner has history of ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease within the past 6 months.
- LNG IUD (Levonogestrel intrauterine device) : MIRENA
- Copper IUD
5) B Combined Hormonal Patch : EVRA
6) Combined Hormonal Ring – NuvaRing
7) Barrier methods – With a correct technique, this is a good method of contraception and offer protection against sexual transmitted disease as well.
- Male condom
- Diaphragm
- Cervical cap
- Sponges & spermicides
8) Periodic abstinence / natural family planning – this method works by avoiding sexual intercourse during fertile period.
- Calendar
- Ovulation method
- Symptom – thermal
- Hormone monitoring
9) Sterilization – This is very high reliable method of contraception however needs to consider as irreversible method. Highly recommend for those who already completed the family.
- Female : BTL (bilateral tubal ligation)
- Male : Vasectomy
