FIBROIDS

Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus. They are often multiple and may vary in size. Consequently they enlarge in pregnancy and on the combined pill. Fibroids are usually become smaller after the menopause.
Presentation:
Many of them are asymptomatic, but some of hem will turn up with various complaints.
- Heavy and prolonged periods (menorrhagia)
- Fertility problems
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal mass
Treatment:
In many women treatment is not needed, but for some, they have to be treated.
Some might need medications and some might fit for surgery. For those who already completed family might be offer to do hysterectomy (removal of uterus) and for those who desiring later pregnancy, surgery to remove the fibroid alone can be done. For those who take combined pill, the fibroid might shrink when they stop taking the drug.
